If you’ve got your very own home sauna in the garden, then first of all, well done. You’re living the dream. But even the finest barrel or luxury Monarch cabin sauna can be made that wee bit better with the right sauna accessories. Here’s our guide to the top sauna accessories that’ll take your home spa experience from “no bad” to “braw”.
Sauna Clothing
The Sauna Hat
A sauna hat is made from thick felt and helps regulate the temperature around your head. That means you can stay in the sauna longer without feeling like your ears are about to pop off. These sauna accessories also stop your hair from becoming straw like after repeated heat sessions.
Sauna Robes and Slippers
After your session, nothing feels better than wrapping up in a big fluffy robe and stepping into a comfy pair of slippers. Choose absorbent materials like cotton or linen and keep them for sauna use only. It makes the whole thing feel a bit more special, like a spa day at home. You could even go full on matching set if you’re so inclined. No judgement here.
Sauna Essentials
Bucket and Ladle
No sauna setup is truly complete without a proper wooden bucket and ladle. These are essential for pouring water over the hot stones to create steam, also known as “löyly” in Finland. Choose a good quality bucket with a strong handle and a matching ladle.
Harvia do a great range of buckets and ladles.
Thermometer and Hygrometer
A thermometer comes in is essential in any sauna, our saunas come complete with a wall mounted thermometer. Most people aim for somewhere between 70°C and 100°C, though personal preference and bravery levels vary.
A hygrometer lets you track the moisture levels inside your sauna. This is especially useful if you enjoy a more humid experience with lots of steam.
Sauna Timer
It’s easy to lose track of time when you’re sitting deep in conversation in a sauna. A traditional hourglass style sauna timer adds both charm and function. Flip it as you enter, and you’ll know exactly when it’s time to come out and cool off.
They’re often mounted on the wall and come in wood or glass designs. It’s a simple touch that adds a bit of ritual to your session.

Sauna Pillows and Backrests
A wooden backrest or a sauna pillow make it easier to relax and let your muscles do their thing without developing plank induced back ache. Wooden backrests are angled just right to support your back. Pillows, often made of linen or sauna safe foam, let you lie back in bliss. Add one or two of these sauna accessories to your setup and you’ll wonder how you ever managed without them.
Essential Oils
A few drops of essential oil in your water bucket can transform your sauna into a multi sensory haven. Eucalyptus is the crowd favourite whilst Pine makes you feel like you’ve been transported into a Scandinavian forest. Only ever use oils that are specifically made for saunas. Normal essential oils might not handle the heat well and could release unpleasant or even harmful fumes.
Sauna Extras
Sauna Speaker
Fancy a little background music or guided meditation while you sweat it out? Waterproof sauna safe speakers are now available and can link up with your phone via Bluetooth. Just make sure your speaker is designed for high heat and humidity, otherwise it’ll be a very short musical career.
Sauna Rules Sign
If you share your sauna with friends or family, a cheeky sauna rules sign can add a bit of humour while keeping everyone on the same page. Things like “No phones”, “Bring your own towel” or “First to leave makes the tea”.
It’s all part of the experience. Besides, it lets visitors know you take your heat seriously, but not too seriously.
